Sustainable Design | Material Transformation | Music & Memory
Wear Your Music is an interdisciplinary design project that merges visual art, object memory, and cultural iconography. As an artist, my role in this ongoing work has been to transform ephemeral materials—used guitar strings donated by legendary musicians—into intentional, emotionally resonant wearable art.
The project explores themes of trace, authenticity, and legacy through material reuse. Each guitar string carries with it not only the physical history of performance but also the intimate marks of time, sound, and gesture. In the act of shaping these into jewelry, I’m engaging in a tactile translation of energy into form—designing pieces that function as both adornment and artifact.
Working with strings from artists such as Eric Clapton, Metallica, John Mayer, Bonnie Raitt, and Carlos Santana, the project becomes a study in material storytelling. These are not neutral raw materials; they are imbued with cultural weight, sonic memory, and fan devotion. My design practice centers on how to honor that aura without overshadowing it, allowing the material’s narrative to remain visible through minimalist but intentional form.
Core artistic inquiries in this work include:
How can personal and collective memory be held in an object?
Where does utility end and symbolism begin?
What are the ethics and poetics of wearable relics?
The project also operates within a social and environmental ethos. Each piece is handmade in the U.S., and a portion of every sale supports nonprofit organizations selected by the contributing artists. This creates a closed loop of creative reuse, cultural exchange, and collective impact.
As a visual artist, Wear Your Music represents an evolving exploration of how design, memory, and material history can intersect in meaningful, wearable form.
